TLDR:

Stephen has been a senior operations exec at Goop and One Kings Lane, building scalable ops to keep pace with each company's explosive growth. Before he was on the brand side, he cut his teeth as an industrial engineer at UPS. Today, he's available for fractional, advisory, and contract roles both short- and long-term.

Meet Stephen Martinez!

Stephen's most recent role was as EVP of Operations at Goop, where he started as VP in 2017 and was promoted twice. During his tenure, he grew his team 10x to keep up with the company's explosive growth.

Prior to Goop, Stephen was the Director of Supply Chain at One Kings Lane from 2013 through its acquisition by Bed Bath and Beyond in 2016. His operations career began with UPS in 2007 in Industrial Engineering, where he learned his logistics and efficiency fundamentals.

We asked him a few questions to get to know him better.

What's something you're Top 10% at as an operator?

I excel at building infrastructure to enable scale. At Goop, I led operations through a 600% increase in orders in just 3 years. I managed multiple functions including Logistics and Fulfillment, Customer Service, Vendor & Merch Operations, Workplace & Facilities, and VIP Clientele.

My ability to pivot quickly and effectively has been crucial in navigating the complexities of fast-growing companies. I've learned to always stay close to the data and proactively anticipate scenarios to drive business outcomes as the landscape changes.

What are a few of the projects you've led that you're most proud of?

At One Kings Lane, I created a "hybrid fulfillment program" with our highest volume vendor. This improved time to customer by 4 days and achieved cost savings of 18% with scale capabilities. We essentially stood up a drop ship fulfillment process and team in the vendor's facility, eliminating the need for LTL shipments from their facility to our DC for DTC order fulfillment.

At Goop, I took over the Retail program in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. After initially shuttering stores and reducing the team, we reopened, and I functioned in a GM capacity with full P&L ownership. We built it into a profitable 5-store program, improving EBITDA by 21% and laying out a 5-year expansion plan to 20+ stores.

At UPS, I restructured transportation to scale operations for the newly launched Amazon partnership, delivering 90% of Amazon volume. This involved redesigning 360 driver and route plans across the 3 facilities that cover the Phoenix metro area to accommodate the increased demand.

What kinds of consulting engagements are you open to?

I'm open to fractional, advisory, and contract roles, both short-term and long-term. My expertise lies in leadership, guidance, strategy, implementing structure, building teams, and driving specific initiatives. I'm particularly interested in helping companies build the infrastructure necessary to enable scale.
